I'm fundraising for...Mini Marvels Appeal Neonatal Doncaster Royal infirmary by Completing Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge
With my Brothers and Sisters supporting me I will be completing the Yorkshire Three Peaks 20th June Fundraising for Doncaster Women’s and Children’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care UnitOur beautiful baby girl, Margaret Ruth Thompson, was born eight weeks early at Doncaster Women’s and Children’s Hospital. She arrived weighing just 5lb 5oz and was diagnosed with Down syndrome (Trisomy 21) and a large hole in her heart.
Despite facing so many challenges from the very beginning, Margaret has been a little fighter every single day.
Before this experience, we never truly realised just how incredible the staff working within our NHS neonatal intensive care units are. The doctors, nurses, and support staff at Doncaster have shown our family nothing but love, care, compassion, and support throughout the most emotional and difficult time of our lives. Margaret is now nine weeks old and currently awaiting open-heart surgery, and we honestly cannot thank the staff enough for everything they have done for both our daughter and our family.
These amazing people work tirelessly every day. They are overworked, underpaid, and often unrecognised for the life-changing work they do.
During our journey, we also spent two weeks in Sheffield shortly after Margaret was born, and it highlighted how much support and improvement Doncaster’s unit could benefit from. The rooms for mums and babies need updating, the beds and mattresses are worn and uncomfortable, and the bathrooms and staff kitchen are in need of care and renovation. This unit deserves better, and so do the babies, families, and staff who rely on it every day.
To give something back and help support this incredible neonatal unit, we will be completing the 24-Mile Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge.
